107 Sickened in Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cargill Ground Turkey

More than 100 people have been sickened in an outbreak of antibiotic-resistant <"http://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/food_poisoning">Salmonella linked to ground turkey products made by Cargill, Inc. The outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg infections has now reached 31 states.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 107 people are known to have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella. Cases have been reported in: Alabama (1), Arkansas (1), Arizona (3), California (6), Colorado (2), Georgia (2), Illinois (13), Indiana (1), Iowa (2), Kansas (1), Kentucky (2), Louisiana (1), Massachusetts (3), Maryland (1), Michigan (12), Minnesota (2), Mississippi (1), Missouri (4), Nebraska (2), Nevada (1), New York (2), North Carolina (3), Ohio (10), Oklahoma (1), Oregon (1), Pennsylvania (5), South Dakota (3), Tennessee (2), Texas (14), Utah (1), and Wisconsin (4).

Illnesses have occurred in people younger than 12 months old up to age 89. Among the 64 ill persons with available information, 25 (39%) have been hospitalized. So far one person, a man from California, has died.

Most people infected with Salmonella bacteria develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. Older adults, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness from Salmonella infection.

According to the CDC, the outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg is resistant to several commonly prescribed antibiotics, including ampicillin, streptomycin and tetracycline.

The outbreak has been linked to ground turkey products made at a Cargill processing facility in Arkansas. The facility is closed while the company and federal health inspectors work to determine the source of the Salmonella.

The outbreak prompted Cargill to recall 36 million lbs of ground turkey made at the Arkansas facility. The Cargill ground turkey recall includes chubs of fresh and frozen ground turkey, as well as retail trays of ground turkey meat and ground turkey patties. Recalled products were sold under the names Honeysuckle White, Giant Eagle, Riverside, HEB, Kroger, Safeway, Fit & Active, Shady Brook Farms, and Spartan. The products subject to recall today bear the establishment number “P-963″ inside the USDA mark of inspection. Cargill requests that consumers who may have purchased any recalled ground turkey products return them to the point-of-purchase. The CDC is warning that because ground turkey has a long shelf life, much of the recalled product could still be in consumers’ freezers. The agency is urging consumers to check packaging on any ground turkey in their homes.
