A large recall of 240,000 Adventure Playsets Wooden Swing Sets are being recalled, expanding on a prior, similar recall, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), just announced.
The prior recall (the notice can be accessed at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml10/10029.html) was announced in November 2009 and involved 275,000 playsets in the U.S. and 6,800 in Canada.
The wood in the posts of the fort sections on the swing sets can weaken because of rotting. This defect poses a fall hazard. To date, Adventure Playsets has received over 500 complaints reporting concern over the weakened wood in the 2-inch by 4-inch plastic-coated uprights. One fall report was received because the ladder failed, which resulted in bruises and scratches.
The defective Adventure Playsets Wooden Swing Sets were manufactured in the United States; imported by Adventure Playsets, of Pittsburg, Kansas; and sold at Academy Sports (Yukon model); Mills and Menards (Ventura/II model) all from 2005 to 2007; Mills (Belmont model) in 2004; Toys-R-Us (Bellevue/II model); and Walmart (Tacoma/II, Durango/II, and Sedona models). The units sold for $300-$600.
The recalled swing sets are constructed with swings, slides, and ladders with a fort structure that uses green or cranberry colored plastic-coated 2-inch by 4-inch wood upright posts and a green nylon fabric covered shade.
The defective swing sets were sold under the names Bellevue, Bellevue II, Belmont, Durango, Durango II, Sedona, Tacoma, Tacoma II, Ventura, Venture II, and Yukon; the name is printed on the manufacturer’s instructions that came with the play set. The recalled swing set name, model number, name of the retailer, year, and photograph can be accessed on the CPSC website at: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml11/11262.html
The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled swing sets and contact Adventure Playsets to obtain a free repair kit. Repair kits will include the appropriate angled or vertical upright posts for each model, as well as instructions for dissembling and reassembling each set.
