As we have noted many times in the past, food allergies can often have serious and even life-threatening consequences. Nut allergies, in particular, pose serious health problems even when extremely small amounts are involved.
Many times, nuts are inadvertently included in products that should be nut-free. They also can be in foods that are mislabeled.
Pinnacle Foods Group Inc. of Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, is recalling a limited production run of Duncan Hines Double Fudge Brownie mix, because the products were found to contain undeclared walnuts.
This recall applies only to the following products: “DUNCAN HINES® FAMILY STYLE CHEWY FUDGE BROWNIES” with the lot code listed below, which were sold at Safeway stores located in Northern California, Nevada and Hawaii serviced by Safeway’s Tracy, CA Distribution Center.
The cartons listed above may contain “Walnut Brownie” mix rather than the “Family Style Chewy Fudge Brownie” mix and could therefore contain nuts not are not listed as ingredients on the carton.
Individuals who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.
This voluntary recall was initiated after Pinnacle Foods received a call from a consumer informing them that the “DUNCAN HINES® FAMILY STYLE CHEWY FUDGE BROWNIES” she purchased actually contained a walnut brownie mix.
To date, there have been no reports of any illnesses.

The recall applies only to the “DUNCAN HINES® FAMILY STYLE CHEWY FUDGE BROWNIES, not to any other Duncan Hines products sold by Safeway in the states listed above.
