Following a massive recall last week, Toyota is now recalling about 95,700 cars and crossover vehicles sold in the United States. The recall, reported JustAuto.com, was initiated after it was found that icing situations in cold temperatures could hinder vehicle braking systems.
The earlier recall was announced by the car maker for almost 690,000 vehicles that were built and sold in China by Toyota’s joint ventures in that country, said JustAuto.com.
In the United States, the newest recall involves model years 2009 and 2010 of Toyota’s Corolla and model years 2008 and 2009 of Toyota’s Scion xD. All the vehicles involved are equipped with 1.8-litre engines, said JustAuto.com, which noted that the vehicles involved are also registered in 19 so-called cold weather states.
According to JustAuto.com, Toyota indicated that it discovered that when a recalled car was operating in very low temperatures, a situation could occur in which condensed moisture from the “positive crankcase ventilation port” could leak into the vehicle’s brake system vacuum port and freeze. The ice that would then build up potentially reducing the “vacuum power assist” to the brakes, according to JustAuto.com, “and lead to lengthened vehicle stopping distances,” said Toyota.
To resolve the problem, Toyota dealers will fit a new intake air connector.
In China, the recall involves certain Camry, Corolla, Vios, and Yaris cars which were manufactured in the past four years, said Just Autos.com. Tokai Rika is the Japanese firm that supplied the defective window switch system that caused the problem that involves excessive lubrication, which could result in the electric window switch control to short circuit and catch fire, said JustAutos.com.
In that case, reported Reuters, Toyota Motor Corp is recalling 688,314 sedans, including the Camry, which were manufactured at its two China joint ventures. This recall is considered Toyota’s largest in China, noted Reuters.
The recall involves 384,736 Camry models manufactured between May 15, 2006 and December 31, 2008, said Reuters and also included 22,767 Yaris compact cars made between May 15 and December 31 of 2008. The Camry and Yaris vehicles involved were made by Toyota’s joint venture with Guangzhou Auto, located in southern China.
Also involved are 35,523 Vios vehicles manufactured between February 18 and December 25 of 2008 and 245,288 Corolla models manufactured from May 17, 2007 to December 25 of 2008, said Reuters. The Corolla and Vios vehicles were made at Toyota’s joint venture with FAW.
Late last year we wrote that Toyota was one of several car makers involved in recalls over all-weather floor-mats that were not being secured and slipping under the acceleration pedal. At the time, the problems caused eight crashes and injured 12 people and included floor mats sold with the 2007/08 Toyota Camry.
Last May, Toyota also issued a recall for around 90,000 Highlander Sport Utility Vehicles because of defective safety belts that were potentially interfering with the proper operation of rear-facing child safety seats. At the time, Toyota was facing at least one other lawsuit involving another type of seatbelt, as well as a whistleblower lawsuit charging the company covered up safety issues.
