The federal government is investigating a fire risk that may be associated with Jeep Wranglers, according to the Associated Press. According to the report, the possible Jeep Wrangler defect under investigation could affect as many as 220,000 vehicles.
According to The Toledo Blade, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened the Jeep Wrangler probe on August 12. It was prompted by complaints filed by three vehicle owners. The complaints allege that the vehicles’ transmission overheated. One reported smoke that occurred when transmission fluid leaked onto the catalytic converter. Another claimed a fire occurred. No injuries have been reported.
The NHTSA investigation is focusing on 2007-2008 model year Wranglers with automatic transmissions, the Associated Press said. According to the Toledo Blade, such investigations can lead to recalls.
Chrysler, which makes the Jeep Wrangler, said in a statement that it is aware of alleged fires involving Jeep Wranglers that have been reported in China, but has not received any domestic reports. The company said it is cooperating with the NHTSA.

Our 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee ignited in our driveway. Fire began in the back of the vehicle. Any other reported 06 Grand Cherokee Fires that begin in the back of the car, i.e. lights, electrical, etc.? Need to know. Thanks
