If the car is "drive by wire" selecting neutral may not help. Brakes may not help.

Its sad but thats Life

I cannot believe all the hype over this accident albiet tragic that it is, does sounds suspicious in its own right..there are a multitude of actions that could of been performed to slow a car down many already mentioned.
But look at this from another view unfortunatly there is and will always be an exceptable level of fatalities based on some form of failure per percentage in all area's of manufacture and in everyday life. If you look at how many cars that have been produced by Toyota as a snapshot over the last five years which runs into millions...then look at positively confirmed fatilities due to machanical failure and it works out microscopic. If all manufacturing was forced to recall based on small related accidents due to manufacturing failures and I'm not stating it should or should not be the case, but make the point we would be in perpetual recall. This will most likely result in thousands of job loses, and then I suspect peoples mindset will lean towards the driver rather than the car. for instance I saw an artical with reference to a lady that said when she bought a Toyota Carolla 3 years ago it had a steering problem when questioned as to what happened when she reported it to her Toyota dealer she said she had not because she had got used to it she is still in possession of the car. Now would you think that she eventualy learned that turning the steering to left would make the car steer left and the same would happen if she turn it to the right it would steer right or did the car get used to the lunatic behind the wheel. What I am trying to say there are more preventative fatalities that do not get even a acknowledgement and all in the name of it would not be in the best interest of some governing body. I am just wondering if the media who I believe have blown this out of proportion will take any responsibility if Toyota starts to anounce large job losses. It would be interesting to also see if in the future Vauxhall Ford BMW amongst others get the same type of media coverage, as in the past they have had equaly serious faults but some how kept it to a small write up in the middle of a newspaper or at most reported by local TV

What a terrible accident. Out of curiosity -- what if the driver had shifted to neutral or even turn the engine off -- wouldn't he slow the vehicle down and limit the damage?

For the first two people who commented..you both need to shut your traps. You don't know anything about anything.
People DIED! Do you not understand?!
OBVIOUSLY SOMETHING went wrong.

I will pray for the families of those who died.

I can't understand why the car wasn't set in Neutral. I just can't understand. Or just slam on the brakes and the car would've stopped aswell.

Not an error from Toyota imho.

Not every person is same and quick to respond in such situations, like gas pedal getting stuck.!!!delivering 270+ horse power to the wheel and slamming breaks usually does not help much forget loosing engine assistance during this critical time.
But I also agree to Dude that in such event force your gears to Neutral / Parking....(let is break), then slamming the break will stop the car!!!

I think there's a foul play involved in this car accident, any off duty cop knows how to professionally operate cars. Officer had many options to stop the car either by turning off his engine, putting car in neutral or even switch car to lower gear which would slow down car with transmition. He also could have pinned the car to center divider or go off curb instead of crashing head on. Either it was a set up or murder suicide.

If the accelerator is stuck just put the car in neutral. Plus the breaks will always have more stopping power than the engine has horse power, don't test this at home but its true unless there is something wrong with the breaking system you can always bring the car to a stop by slamming on the breaks.

I own a 07 Prius, and it is my personal opinion there is no way the mat could ever obstruct the gas pedal, no matter what Toyota says. I have owned many cars in my life and I personally vacuum my floor mats. My Prius floormats require a massive struggle to move or remove. They are not only anchored by clips, the hundreds of little sharp pointed spikes on the underside make it incredibly hard to pull up (tiny barbs on them?). I've never seen anything like it. And the mats are cut so as not to get anywhere close to the accelator pedal.
