The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that an inspection of ConAgra’s production facility in Sylvester, Georgia, revealed evidence of salmonella contamination. The samples taken matched the strain of salmonella that was found in jars of contaminated Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter.
“The fact that FDA found salmonella in the plant environment further suggests that the contamination likely took place prior to the product reaching consumers,†the agency noted.
The FDA also reminded consumers that the product recall extends to three brands of peanut-butter toppings that were made with bulk peanut butter from the ConAgra plant: Sonic Brand Ready-To-Use Peanut Butter (6 lb. 10.5 oz cans), Carvel Peanut Butter Topping (6 lb. 10 oz. cans), and J. Hungerford Smith Peanut Butter Dessert Topping (6 lb. 10 oz. cans).
