Sara Lee Food & Beverage has issued a precautionary recall for several brands of the company’s whole wheat fresh bread products. The recall was ordered after the bread was found to contain small metal and plastic shards. As of now, the recalled products include more than two dozen varieties of Sara Lee breads.
Sara Lee said that it was working with the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to get the bread off store shelves and away from consumers. All of the products were produced at the company’s Meridian, Mississippi bakery. There has been no word on how the foreign material got into the bread. No injuries related to the bread have yet been reported.
The affected products were sold in a variety of grocery and mass merchant retailers in the states of Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Florida. All of the products have “best buy” dates of July 25, 2007 and August 7, 2007. The code “222” is found on the front of the bags. Brands included in the recall are: Colonial, Schnucks, Earthgrains, Flavorite, Foodland, Golden Bake, Grissoms, IGA, Great Value, Piggly Wiggly, Publix, Shurfresh and Sara Lee.
The FDA is urging consumers to check the packaging of any of these products. Only those items with “222” on the package are included in the recall. It does not to pertain to other Sara Lee products, including those sold under the Soft-n-Smooth brand. If consumers find recalled bread in their homes, it should not be eaten. The product can be returned to the store where it was purchased for a refund.
Sara Lee said it has notified all of its retail customers of the recall, and that the products are being removed from stores. Customers with questions can call the company’s toll-free consumer line at 1-800-683-3466 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Central time.
