Slim-Fast ready-to-drink (RTD) products in cans are being recalled today because of potential bacterial contamination. According to a press release from Unilever United States, Inc., the recalled Slim-Fast products should be discarded immediately.
The recalled Slim-Fast products are packaged in paperboard cartons and contain four, six or 12 steel cans that are 11 FL OZ (325 mL) each. Individual cans are also sold in certain retail outlets. The recall involves all Slim-Fast RTD products in cans, regardless of flavor, Best-By date, lot code or UPC number. A listing of all Slim-Fast RTD recalled products can be found here. These products were sold in stores nationwide.
No other Slim-Fast products, including Slim-Fast powdered shakes, meal bars, or snack bars, are affected by this recall.
According to the recall notice, this action was taken after the company conducted quality testing on Slim-Fast RTD products in cans. The tests revealed that the products have the potential to be contaminated with Bacillus cereus, a micro-organism, which may cause diarrhea and possibly nausea and/or vomiting.
Unilever maintains that the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote. The company’s press release says that the Slim-Fast recall is being conducted in an “abundance of caution”. The recall applies to all Slim-Fast RTD products in cans in distribution centers, on-shelf or in back rooms in retail outlets or in consumers’ homes.
Consumers who purchased these products may contact Unilever at 1-800-896-9479 for a full refund. The Consumer Services Center is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM ET. A recorded message is available 24/7.

Just last night, I had a Slim Fast Optima RTD can. After I drank about half, I noticed it appeared to be curdling-like. It still tasted okay in another sip, but I threw it away and haven’t drunk another can although I have both Optima (2 cans remaining) and Low Carb (4 cans remaining) in my refrigerator to still use.
Do I take these remaining cans to the Health Dept being I noticed the curdling?
Do I qualify for a refund? How do I receive this?
Thank you.

Severe stomach cramps and fire hose diarrhea 6 times in 2 months. Once on the way to visit my dying mother, causing me to pull over 3 times and miss work 3 of the times. Yes, Slim Fast won’t be on my grocery list again. They are recalling all cans manufactured since September. Nice of them to let me know in the middle of December. As I’m completely draining my body of fluids and drinking another Slim Fast to replenish the fluids. This is classic theory of diminishing returns. Thanks Slim Fast for offering to replace the ones I didn’t drink. Oh….by the way, the results of the Bacillus cereus caused me to shed a few pounds. Can see it now….Slim Fast announces customers lost an average of 10 lbs. Buy some today. Hope I don’t sound bitter.
