Dollar Store Recalls Utility Knives for Laceration Hazard

A large recall of about 204,000 Tool Bench Utility Knives have been recalled for laceration hazard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced.
The recalled Tool Bench Utility Knives were manufactured in China; sold by Dollar Tree Stores Inc., of Chesapeake, Virginia; and imported by Greenbrier International Inc., of Chesapeake, Virginia.
The recall has been implemented because the Tool Bench Utility Knife’s blade can slide past the blade support during use, posing a laceration hazard to consumers. To date, the Dollar Tree has received one report of a cut/laceration with the utility knife.
The Tool Bench Utility Knife is black or gray and measures about 6 inches long and about 1-¼ inches wide. The package includes an extra blade. The words “Tool Bench Utility Knife” are printed on the front of the product’s packaging; “975942,” date code “93,” and “UPC 639277759429” are printed on the back of the packaging.
The recalled Tool Bench Utility Knife was sold at Dollar Tree, Dollar Bill$, Greenbacks, and Deal$ stores nationwide from April 2009 through October 2009 for about $1.
The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled Tool Bench Utility Knife and return it to the store where purchased for a full refund. We have been following the issue of defective and, sometimes, dangerous imports making their way into this country from China. The recalled Tool Bench Utility Knife is just one of many recalls and issues concerning defective products, food, and medicines imported into this country from China. In 2008, nearly 80 percent of all product recalls in the U.S. involved imports from China. Products such as dog food, baby formula, toys with lead paint, and even pharmaceuticals like heparin were found to have been made with toxic materials and other counterfeit ingredients that have long put American consumers at significant health risks.
Also making news is the ongoing and massive Chinese drywall disaster involving imports from that country.
