Children’s Bangle Bracelets Recalled for Lead Paint Violation

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

About 1,200 Children’s Bangles imported from India by Chandigarh Fashion Inc., of Flushing, New York have been recalled, the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced.

The recall was initiated because the surface coating on the bracelets contains high levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard. Although no incidents or injuries have been reported, to date, it is important to understand that the effects of lead exposure and lead poisoning are not always immediately observable.

This recall involves children’s bangle bracelets, which were sold in packets of 24 and are gold with stripes of red, maroon, black, orange, or green. The recalled Children’s Bangles were sold at Chandigarh Fashion stores in Flushing, New York and Sonia Selections stores in Chicago, Illinois from May 2007 through August 2008 for about $2.

The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately take the recalled Children’s Bangles away from children and return the bracelets to the store where purchased for a full refund.

Exposure to lead in children can cause brain and nervous system damage, behavioral and learning problems, slowed growth, hearing problems, headaches, mental and physical retardation, and behavioral and other health problems. Lead is also known to cause cancer and reproductive harm. Once poisoned by lead, no organ system is immune. Of particular concern is the developing brain because negative influences can have long-lasting effects and can continue well into puberty and beyond. Experts agree that there exists no safe level of lead.
