Pretzels Recalled for Salmonella

As a precautionary measure, the National Pretzel Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is voluntarily recalling all of its Honey Mustard Onion flavored pretzels that were produced since December, 2009 because an ingredient used in the seasoning has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced.
The honey mustard onion seasoning contains Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP), which was recalled by Basic Foods Flavors, Inc. and has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. This is just one of many product recalls in recent days that have been implemented because of the recalled Basic Foods Flavors’ HVP.
We recently wrote that the FDA announced it is actively investigating findings of Salmonella Tennesse in HVP, which was manufactured by Basic Food Flavors, Inc., in Las Vegas, Nevada. HVP is a flavor enhancer used in a wide variety of processed food products, such as soups, sauces, chilis, stews, hot dogs, gravies, seasoned snack foods, dips, and dressings. HVP is also often blended with other spices to make seasonings used in or on foods.
Over 50 product recalls have been announced and more are expected. To date, no illnesses have been reported.
The recalled Honey Mustard Onion seasoned pretzels were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through repackers. A complete listing of the recalled pretzels can be accessed on the FDA Website at: http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm203372.htm No other National Pretzel products are involved in the recall.
The FDA is urging consumers who have purchased any of these recalled products, with the corresponding date codes, to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions about the recall may contact the company at 1-717-637-5931.
Salmonella, which is usually found in food and water contaminated with animal feces, is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstance, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis. Salmonella poisoning can lead to Reiter’s Syndrome, a difficult-to-treat reactive arthritis characterized by severe joint pain, irritation of the eyes, and painful urination.
