A large recall—about 50,000 in the United States and 15,000 in Canada—of Coil Nailers has been implemented, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC) have announced. The recalled Coil Nailers were manufactured in Japan by Hitachi Koki Co. Ltd., of Japan and imported by Hitachi Koki U.S.A., Ltd., of Norcross, Georgia.

The Coil Nailers could have a faulty feeder that can allow nails to be ejected sideways, posing a serious injury hazard to the user or bystanders. To date, the firm has received 37 reports of nails being ejected sideways, including 15 reports of injuries. The injuries were primarily in the eye region, including five reports of partial blindness.

The recalled Coil Nailers are used to project nails into drywall, wood or other materials. The model number is NV83A2 and can be found on the body of the product. Only those units manufactured between October 2002 and September 2005 are included in this recall.

The manufacturing date can be identified by the serial number engraved at the end of the handle. The first digit represents the month: 1 for January, 2 for February, 3 for March, 4 for April, 5 for May, 6 for June, 7 for July, 8 for August, 9 for September, O for October, N for November, and D for December. The second digit represents the year: 2 for 2002, 3 for 2003, 4 for 2004, and 5 for 2005.

The recalled Coil Nailers were sold for between $350 and $400 at Lowe’s, Home Depot, other home improvement and building supply stores, and online at Amazon.com nationwide from November 2002 through March 2006.

The CPSC is warning consumers to immediately stop using the recalled Coil Nailer and contact Hitachi Koki U.S.A., Ltd. for a free repair. Hitachi Koki U.S.A., Ltd. can be reached, toll-free, at 1-800-706-7337 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday or at the firm’s Web site at www.hitachipowertools.com
