Sausage rolls made by Double B  Foods have been recalled over concerns that they may be contaminated with listeria bacteria.  No illnesses have been reported in relation to the Double B Sausage recall, which involves 98,000 pounds of the frozen products.

The Double B recall encompasses 17 varieties of the Texas company’s sausage rolls.   The  Double B Sausage rolls where sold in Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.  The recalled sausage rolls where manufactured by Double B Foods on various dates between October 25 a November 6, 2007.   Each package is marked with either “EST 7184” or “EST P-7184” in the USDA mark of inspection.  Consumers with questions regarding the Double B sausage roll recall  should contact the company at (254) 435-6575.

According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the listeria contamination was discovered by Double B’s in-plant inspection system.   Eating food contaminated with Listeria bacteria can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.

According to the USDA, there are steps consumers can take to avoid listeria poisoning.  First and foremost, it is important to wash hands with warm, soapy water before and after handling raw meat and poultry for at least 20 seconds. Wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot, soapy water. Immediately clean spills.   Raw meats, fish and poultry should be kept away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods. Hot dogs, luncheon meats, bologna or other deli meats should not be eaten unless reheated until steaming hot.  Finally, precooked or ready-to-eat food should be eaten as soon as possible. Listeria can grow in the refrigerator. The refrigerator should be 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower and the freezer 0 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Use an appliance thermometer to check the temperature of your refrigerator.

The Double B Sausage Roll recall is just the latest food poisoning scare to occur in the past several months.  In late October, General Mills recalled several varieties of its Geno’s and Totino’s frozen meat pizzas after they left nearly two dozen people sick with E. coli.   Since September, both the Topps Meat Company and Cargill Meat Solutions have recalled millions of pounds of ground beef over E. coli concerns.   And just yesterday, ConAgra foods announced that it would start making frozen pot pies again.   The company had stopped production of its Banquet and store brand pot pies after they where liked to a Salmonella outbreak that sickened hundreds.
