Lacrosse Gloves Recalled for Lead Paint Violations

Youth and Adult Brine VIP Lacrosse Gloves are being recalled for lead paint violations, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC), in cooperation with Brine, a division of Warrior Sports Inc., of Warren, Michigan, just announced.

About 7,000 Youth and Adult Brine VIP Lacrosse Gloves are being recalled in the United States; 30 are being recalled in Canada.

Screen printing ink used on the silver triad logo on the back of the glove contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

A known neurotoxin, lead exposure can cause brain and nervous system damage in children and fetuses. The toxin also causes behavioral and learning problems, slowed growth, hearing problems, headaches, mental and physical retardation, and behavioral and other health problems. Of particular concern is the developing brain because negative influences can have long-lasting effects and can continue well into puberty and beyond. Lead is known to cause cancer and reproductive harm and, in adults, can damage the nervous system. In high doses, lead poisoning can cause seizure, coma, and death. Once poisoned by lead, no organ system is immune; experts agree that there is no safe level of lead.

To date, no incidents or injuries have been reported; however, the effects of lead exposure are not always immediately evident.

This recall involves black and white Brine VIP lacrosse gloves sold in three sizes: 10, 12, and 13 inches. The name “Brine” is printed in white and a silver triad symbol is printed on the back of the glove on the wrist cuff. The following model numbers are involved (which are printed on the tag): Model number LGLVIP03-618983164529 (13-inch glove), model number LGLVIP02-618983164505 (12-inch glove), and LGLVIP00-618983164543 (10-inch glove).

The recalled Youth and Adult Brine VIP Lacrosse Gloves, which were manufactured in Vietnam, were sold at sporting goods stores nationwide between July 2009 and June 2010 for about $50.

The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the gloves and contact Brine for a replacement or refund. Brine can be reached toll-free at (888) 542-8834 between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, or at the firm’s website at http://www.brine.com/recall
