A hotel fire at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut yesterday afternoon resulted in the evacuation of nearly 300 guests.  No one was injured as a result of the rooftop blaze at the Great Cedars Hotel at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, but the hotel is closed and will remain so for several days.

Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Great Cedar Hotel are owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe. Great Cedar is the Mashantuckets’ second hotel and second casino, but it was the first to house both a hotel and a casino in the same building.

The fire at the Great Cedars Hotel at the Foxwoods Resort Casino was reported by a security guard stationed across from the building around noon yesterday.  At least 50 firefighters from the tribe and surrounding towns responded to the Foxwoods Resort Casino. The fire at the Great Cedar Hotel at Foxwoods Resort Casino smoldered throughout the afternoon, but by early evening it was extinguished.

Once the blaze was out, crews began peeling back the steel roof where authorities believe the Foxwoods Casino Resort hotel fire started. According to fire officials, the Great Cedar Hotel fire broke out between a mechanical equipment room near the roof and an exterior hall. At this point, fire officials have not determined what caused the Foxwoods Casino Resort Hotel Fire.

There were no injuries reported in the Foxwoods Resort Casino fire, however 280 guests were evacuated from the Great Cedar Hotel.  Employees of Foxwoods Resort Casino initially evacuated the first two floors of the building, and then the entire Great Cedar Hotel was emptied.  As a precaution, the casino floor was also evacuated.

Evacuated guests were moved to rooms at other Foxwoods Resort Casino hotels, as well as at a hotel in a nearby town.  The evacuated Foxwoods casino guests where not permitted to return to their rooms to retrieve personal belongings until Wednesday.

According to a hotel spokesperson, the Great Cedar Hotel at Foxwoods Resort Casino sustained water damage to the top floors.  It is expected that the Great Cedar Hotel will remain closed for several days, however the casino is expected to open today.

The blaze at the Great Cedars Hotel at Foxwoods Resort Casino marked the second time in less than a week that a casino hotel was evacuated as a result of a roof top fire.  Last Friday, more than 5,000 guests where evacuated after another rooftop inferno broke out at the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. That fire resulted in injuries to 17 people.   It is still not clear when the 3,000 room Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino will be able to open.
