Bassettbaby is recalling another in its “Wendy” line of cribs. In this recall, Bassettbaby is recalling the “Wendy Bellissimo Hidden Hills Collection” drop-side cribs because spindles on the drop-side of the crib could loosen creating a gap that poses an entrapment and strangulation hazard to children. No injuries have yet been reported in this case; however, Bassettbaby has received three reports of spindles coming loose. The crib recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The cribs involved in this recall are the full-size, drop-side crib from Bassettbaby’s Wendy Bellissimo Hidden Hills collection. The crib’s model number is 5446-0504 and can be located on the bottom rail of the crib’s headboard. The recalled Wendy Bellissimo Hidden Hills Collection crib was sold in a Navajo Pine finish at Babies “R” Us stores nationwide from November 2007 through January 2008. The cribs, which were made in China, retailed for about $400. No other models are included in this recall.
Consumers are advised to stop using the cribs immediately and contact Bassettbaby for either a free crib replacement or a full refund. Meanwhile, Bassettbaby has contacted consumers directly. This is the second such crib recall by Bassettbaby in recent months. In the first case, both Bassettbaby and the CPSC were slow to respond to complaints and Bassettbaby was unhelpful to parents complaining about problems with the Wendy Bellisimo convertible crib. In that line of cribs, the bolt holes had been drilled too close to the edge, causing the wood to split and resulting in the sides of the crib separating. A recall was issued for nearly 9000 of the baby cribs due to a construction flaw that posed a serious danger to any child who might be placed in the crib. Last year’s recall involved several models of the Wendy Bellissimo Collection convertible cribs sold exclusively at Babies “R” Us nationwide from July 2005 through October 2007. The recall, in that case, was also due to an entrapment and strangulation hazard: The bolts connecting the top corners of the crib could come loose, creating a gap. In that case, according to the CPSC, Bassettbaby received 85 reports of bolts loosening, including one report of a 13-month old child’s hand becoming trapped between the railings.
Prior to that recall, in September, close to one million Graco and Simplicity cribs were recalled due to a design flaw that resulted in three children’s deaths. The CPSC was criticized for its handling of the investigation and, according to the Chicago Tribune, when the CPSC looked into the death of a nine-month old boy, the CPSC inspector never bothered to identify the type of crib involved nor did he inspect the crib. The CPSC issued the recall after learning the Chicago Tribune was about to reveal the agency’s mishandling of the cases.
