The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with the Munire Furniture, Inc. of Piscataway, NJ, announced a voluntary recall of its Majestic Curved Top and Flat Top Cribs, Essex Cribs, Brighton/Sussex Cribs, and Captiva Cribs. The recall involves about 24,000 defective cribs that pose a fall hazard.
The wooden cribs fail to meet the federal safety standards for cribs. The four support brackets on the mattress support spring are too long and the brackets prevent the spring from lowering to the full 26 inch minimum height in its lowest position, allowing children inside to crawl over the railing, which poses a fall hazard.
The recalled cribs include: Majestic Curved Top cribs with model number 9500; Majestic Flat Top cribs with model number 9000; Essex cribs with model number 7100; Brighton/Sussex cribs with model number 9100 and Captiva cribs with model number 5100. Only cribs with manufacture dates between November 1, 2005 and November 1, 2007 are included in the recall and the crib model number is printed on the white label on the bottom inside of the right side rail. Likewise, the crib manufacture date is printed on either the white label near the model number or on the white label located on the bottom of the headboard. Those cribs with a green sticker on the mattress frame are not included in the recall.
All of the cribs were manufactured in Indonesia and sold at specialty juvenile product stores nationwide and retailed for between $400 and $600.

This is not the first time cribs have been recalled recently. Earlier this month, Bassettbaby recalled its “Wendy Bellissimo Hidden Hills Collection” drop-side cribs because drop-side spindles could loosen, creating a gap that posed an entrapment and strangulation. In an earlier recall, Bassettbaby and the CPSC were slow to respond to complaints and Bassettbaby was unhelpful to parents complaining about problems with the Wendy Bellisimo convertible crib. The bolt holes had been drilled too close to the edge, causing the wood to split and resulting in the sides of the crib separating. A recall was issued for nearly 9000 of the cribs due to a construction flaw that posed a serious danger, including an entrapment and strangulation hazard and involved several models of the Wendy Bellissimo Collection convertible cribs. Prior to that, in September, close to one million Graco and Simplicity cribs were recalled due to a design flaw that resulted in three children’s deaths. The CPSC was criticized for its handling of the investigation and, according to the Chicago Tribune, when the CPSC looked into the death of a nine-month old boy, the CPSC inspector never bothered to identify the type of crib involved nor did he inspect the crib. The CPSC issued the recall after learning the Chicago Tribune was about to reveal the agency’s mishandling of the cases.
