In a third such recall, Bassettbaby of Basset, Virginia is recalling 550 Wendy Bellissimo Hidden Hills Collection Cribs. The pose to an entrapment hazard because the space between the spindles on some cribs fails to meet federal standards. The recalled Bassettbaby Cribs were sold at Babies “R” Us stores nationwide from November 2007 through February 2008, retailed for about $500, and were manufactured in China. The Bassettbaby Cribs are full-size cribs from the Wendy Bellissimo Hidden Hills collection. The model number—located on the bottom headboard rail—is 5446-0521. The recalled crib was sold in a Navajo Pine finish.
Consumers are warned to stop using the crib immediately and contact Bassettbaby to schedule an in-home inspection. Recalled cribs will be replaced. Bassettbaby can be reached at (866) 618-5446 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET, Monday through Sunday or via the firm’s Website at www.bassettbaby.com.
In February, we reported that Bassettbaby recalled another crib from the same collection wherein the spindles on the drop-side could loosen, creating a gap that posed an entrapment and strangulation hazard. In an even earlier case, both Bassettbaby and the CPSC were slow to respond to complaints and Bassettbaby was unhelpful to parents complaining about problems with the Wendy Bellissimo convertible crib. In that case, boltholes had been drilled too close to the edge, causing the wood to split and resulting in the crib sides separating. A recall was issued for nearly 9000 cribs.
Also, Simmons Kids just recalled about 20,000 crib mattresses due to an entrapment hazard. The mattresses were manufactured in the US by Simmons Kids, a division of The Simmons Manufacturing Co., LLC of Atlanta, Georgia and are being recalled because some mattresses measure less than the 27 1/4 inch minimum width, requirement creating a gap between the mattress and side rails. Simmons Kids and the CPSC have received one report of a six-month old baby becoming wedged between the mattress and crib’s frame.
The open coil mattresses—made between July 1, 2006 and March 23, 2008—have a color label attached to the top or side with model names: Pottery Barn Kids by Simmons Kids Lullaby, Simmons Kids Slumber Time Evening Star Luxury Firm, Simmons Kids Baby Mattress Series 400, or Simmons Kids Baby Mattress 234 Coil Count. The mattresses also have a law tag sewn into the edge with the manufacture date and may contain one of the following model numbers: H59044.15.0014, M59082.15.0002, M59027.15.0002, or M59065.15.0006. Mattresses were sold at Pottery Barn Kids and nursery furniture retailers from July 2006 through May 2008 and retailed for between $100 and $150.
Consumers should measure the mattress width by removing all outer coverings, placing the mattress on the floor and measuring the width near the middle, from the outside edge of the tape binding to the opposite side of the mattress. If the mattress measures less than 27-1/4 inches, immediately stop using the mattress and contact Simmons Kids to receive a free replacement mattress.
