Lead Tainted cars, dangerous blinds and shades, and pacifiers that pose a choking hazard are the latest dangerous products subject to recalls, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced.

Importer TDI International, of Los Angeles, California has recalled about 150 “High Speed” Pull Back Toy Cars because surface paint on TDI’s Pull Back Toy Cars contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.  The recalled High Speed Pull Back Toy Cars are yellow with the word “PROWL” printed on the side and “VICTOR” printed on the hood; there is a blue and red police warning light on the top.  The recalled High Speed Pull Back Toy Cars were made in China and sold in small retail stores in Houston and Hidalgo, Texas from June and July 2008 for about $2.  The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately take the recalled High Speed Pull Back Toy Cars away from children and contact TDI International for a full refund or a replacement toy.  TDI International can be reached toll-free at (877) 834-8088 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. PT Monday through Friday.

In children and fetuses, lead exposure can cause brain and nervous system damage, behavioral and learning problems, slowed growth, hearing problems, headaches, mental and physical retardation, and behavioral and other health problems.  Lead is also known to cause cancer and reproductive harm and, in adults, lead can damage the nervous system.

Distributor Cost Plus Inc., of Oakland, California is recalling about 692,400 Roman Shades and Roll-up Blinds because the Roman Shades have a looped pull cord and exposed inner cords on the back of the shade, which presents a strangulation hazard.  The recalled Roll-Up Blinds have a looped pull cord and two lifting cord loops that run around the bottom rail, which present a strangulation hazard to young children.  Although no specific injuries have been reported in this recall, the CPSC is aware of the death of a child who became entangled in the lifting cord of a roll-up style blind whose manufacturer and retailer has not yet been identified, as well as at least two deaths involving exposed inner cords on various styles of roman-style shades.

This recall involves four shade styles:  The “Canvass Roman Shade” available in four different sizes (4’x 6’, 5’x 6’, 2.5’ x 6’ and 3’x 6’) with sku numbers 376983, 376984, 376985, 384870; the “Sari Roman Shade” available in two colors (berry and chocolate) with sku numbers 394700, 394701; and the “Buddha or Floral Matchstick Blinds” with sku numbers 407376 and 407221.  A small tag on the back of the Canvass and Sari Roman Shades states “World Market© Cost Plus, Inc., Oakland, CA 94607, Made in India, 100% Cotton.”  The recall also involves other styles of wooden roll-up blinds, with or without valances, with the following SKU numbers:  404991, 404992, 404993, 400742, 499743, 400744, 400745, 400746 and 358064, 358065, 358066, 358067, and 358068.  The recalled Roman Shades and Roll-Up Blinds were made in India and China and sold for between $25 and $60 at Cost Plus and World Market stores nationwide from February 2006 through August 2008.

The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled Roman Shades and Roll-up Blinds and return them to any Cost Plus/World Market store to obtain a full refund.  The CPSC is also reminding consumers to examine all Roman Blinds and Roll-up shades in their homes.  If looped pull cords, exposed inner cords, or exposed lifting loops are found and children are in the home or occasionally visit your home, please consider replacing the blinds or shades with products that do not have exposed pull cords or inner cords.  Cost Plus can be reached toll-free at (877) 967-5362 between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. ET daily, or at the firm’s Website:  www.worldmarket.com.

Importer Top Goods Trading, of Temple City, California is recalling about 38,000 Flashing Pacifiers because they are not in compliance with federal safety standards for pacifiers.  Although the pacifiers are marketed to older children and adults, they could be given to babies and cause serious injury or death: the pieces of the pacifier can separate, posing a choking hazard and the necklaces pose a strangulation hazard.  The recalled Top Goods Flashing Pacifiers have a yellow heart-shaped mouth guard and handle with a 15-inch cord attached to the handle; LED lights are activated by pushing the heart-shaped handle into the base of the pacifier.

The recalled Flashing Pacifiers were made in China and sold for about $.50 in retail stores in the Los Angeles area from November 2007 through November 2008.  The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately take the recalled pacifier away from children and contact Top Goods Trading for a refund or exchange.  Top Goods Trading can be reached by calling the firm collect at (213) 680-0388 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. PT Monday through Friday.
