The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced that Old Navy LLC of San Francisco, California has recalled tens of thousands of its Stuffed Animal and Creature Toys because the toys’ button eyes can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.
The CPSC noted that the recall involves about 35,500 Old Navy Stuffed Animal and Creature Toys in the United States and about 5,400 in Canada.
The Old Navy Stuffed Animal and Creature toys were manufactured in China and are made out of cotton and have plastic button eyes. The Stuffed Animal and Creature Toys come in a variety of styles, including a rabbit, a penguin, and a reindeer, as follows. The style number can be found on a while label that is sewn into the toy’s side seam:
- Brown Plaid Creature: Stubby Stuberson; style number 612756
- Pink Striped Dove; style number 600571
- Grey Dog; style number 600572
- Hot Pink Creature: Lucy Toothy; style number 612800
- White Dog: Dr. Poopsie; style number 612738
- Brown Penguin; style number 612672
- Light Pink Rabbit; style number 612671
- Brown Reindeer; style number 612728
- Dark Pink Rabbit: Honey O’Bunny; style number 612806
The recalled Old Navy Stuffed Animal and Creature Toys were sold at Old Navy stores and via Old Navy’s Website at www.oldnavy.com, from July 2008 through February 2009. The recalled Old Navy toys retailed for between $6 and $10 each.
The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately take the recalled Old Navy Stuffed Animal and Creature Toy(s) away from young children and return the toy(s) to any Old Navy store for a full refund. If the recalled Old Navy Stuffed Animal and Creature Toys were purchased online, contact Old Navy for instructions on how to return the recalled toy for a full refund. Consumers who return the toy before July 1, 2009 will also receive a $5 coupon toward a future Old Navy purchase. Late last year, the Associated Press reported that the CPSC confirmed that most of the prior year’s deaths involving children and toys were caused by blocked airways and drowning and that no less than 18 children under the age of 15 died in toy-related accidents; 14 were boys. Of the deaths, said the CPSC, eight involved choking accidents.
By November of 2007, the CPSC announced recalls of 61 toys involving over 25 million products.
