2002 mountaineer-back out of drive or packing spot and it sits there too long. When driving must shift to 3rd now and go slow. It was missing/jerking occasssionally in drive daily for a month. Had one hub replaced last year and now told needs two more at the same time transmission died. I cann't afford all these thousands of dollars to fix this and had about 2 years so still got car payments!!!

Our 2004 Explorer Limited (8cyl, 4wd and tow package) banged into reverse last night while leaving our parking spot at a restaurant. It's not the first time and it seems to happen when parked on a downward incline. Ours has also banged (from 2nd into 1st?) when going through our development when speed is lower than 25mph. Just hoping that it will last a few more years because at 35Gs I'll be bent if I don't get a full 10 years out of this truck.

2002 merc mountaineer v-8. Shifts poorly
and locks in 3rd at low speed. Also stays in 3rd clunks then shifts up.How long until it gives up? Dealer has no clue like the trans has no dipstick.
My suv has 74000 and has never towed anything.Any recall activity yet? What do I fill out and where do I send it?
Thanks in advance for your help, Richard

Two days ago, I tried to back out of my garage. I put my 2005 Ford Explorer XLT in reverse and it did not move at all for about 5 seconds. I pushed on the accelerator and it took off really fast. Then I put it in drive and it did the same thing. Then about 5 miles down the road; the computer message center says "check transmission" and started rattling. I limped the SUV to a transmission shop and he told me that my transmission was "toast". Now I have to pay $3,000 to get a new transmission installed. I am pissed!. Can you let me know what recourse do I have....Rich...

Yesterday, Feb 7, 2010 I backed my 2006 Ford Explorer into the driveway. The transmission made a not so funny noise and when I put the shifter into park, the truck began rolling back down the driveway. I tried it a few times and finally had to apply the parking break to get the truck to stay put. I've just called the dealer, but got an answering machine. I'll wait to see what they have to say and get back to you.

Wow,... This Kinda sucks bad all these FORDS with Transmision, head gaskets,etc...Lots of money to repair, going out after the Warranty,
I to have a transmision problem were they say the transmision is Toasted in my 2003 f150 crew cab with the 5.4 liter 4speed automatic.
sometimes the trans works, then sometimes it hits real hard in second gear then slips then sometimes it sticks into first and then sometimes it works just fine,I think its a computer thing because if a trans slips all the time its bad and if it grabs its fine ,Cant have both. My theory is the transmisions need one thing and the Mummy`s just replace the whole ticket without solving this decade old problem
Ford is dropping the ball on this and will have to pay by loosing lifelong consumers....By By Ford after paying nearly 50k for my truck and not quite 55000 miles and the trans is bad and you wont help ...Hmmmm you wont get another 50k from me or my rather large family and then everyone we tell that you dont and wont stand behind you products...

The problem of not being able to shift out of park is becoming a common one for 2006 Explorers. Ford's fix is to charge $500+ to replace the shifter assembly rather then replace a $5 switch that is easily accesible on the side of the shifter with 10 minutes worth of labor. A lot of 2006 EB Explorers are also starting to turn up with defective seams in the radiators. The seam in the top passenger side is failing. Ford wants to charge $1200 to replace the radiator rather then fix the seam. Most of the failures that I've read about are happening in the 40 - 50,00 mile rage. Mine was at 42,300. All out of warrantee.

Also include the 2006 Ford Explorer, they also slip. Mine had done it from drive to Neutral, and from Park to Reverse.

How about checking into the many, many, many transmissions problems in the 2001-2005 Explorer Sport Tracs while you're at it. Also wondering why there have not been any recalls? Thanks.
