Today’s defective product recalls from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) include children’s hooded jackets and off-road motorcycles.
Jason Evans Children’s Hooded Jackets
About 1,300 Children’s Hooded Jackets with Drawstrings were just recalled by Jason Evans Associates, LLC of Hewlett, New York because the recalled jackets have a drawstring through the hood which can pose a strangulation hazard to children. The recalled Jason Evans Children’s Hooded Jackets were sold in boy sizes 4, 5, 6, and 7 in colors black/grey. The RN number 30842 is printed in the center back neck and the style number 1708 is printed on the hangtag on the center back neck. The recalled Jason Evans Children’s Hooded Jackets were sold by the Burlington Coat Factory from September 2006 through April 2009 for about $17 and were made in Pakistan.
In February 1996, the CPSC issued guidelines to help prevent children from strangling or becoming entangled on the neck and waist by drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets and sweatshirts. In May 2006, the CPSC’s Office of Compliance issued an announcement that such outerwear with drawstrings at the hood or neck would be regarded as both defective and a substantial risk of injury to young children. Still the guidelines are routinely ignored by the clothing industry, and that attitude has had deadly consequences for some children. From January 1985 through January 1999, the CPSC received reports of 22 deaths and 48 non-fatal entanglement incidents involving drawstrings on children’s clothing.
The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately remove the drawstrings from the jackets to eliminate the hazard or return the garment to either the place of purchase or to Jason Evans Associates for a full refund. About 550 Off-Road Motorcycles were recalled by KTM North America, Inc. of Amherst, Ohio due to a front fork failure in which the front fork inner tube on the off-road motorcycles can crack and separate from the fork axle, posing a risk of injury or death to the operator. This recall is being conducted to prevent possible injuries and involves model year 2009 KTM Off-Road Motorcycles. The model name and KTM™ logo are located on the right and left shrouds. The following models, which are all Orange/Black, are involved: 125SX, 150SX, 250XC-W, and 300XC-W.
The recalled KTM North America Off-Road Motorcycles were manufactured in Austria and sold by KTM dealers nationwide from December 2008 through April 2009 for between $6,000 and $8,000.
The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using these vehicles and contact their local KTM dealer to schedule a free repair. Registered owners of the recalled off-road motorcycles are being sent a direct notice.
