JBS Swift Beef Company, of Greeley, Colorado, is recalling approximately 41,280 pounds of beef products that may be contaminated with the E. coli O157:H7 pathogen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced. The recall is a Class I, which means this a health hazard situation in which there is a reasonable probability that use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.
The beef products—listed below—were produced on April 21 and 22, 2009, and shipped to distributors and retail establishments in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and Wisconsin. The problem was discovered through FSIS microbiological sampling and an investigation into the distribution of other products.
Each of the following recalled boxes of beef bears the establishment number “EST. 969″ inside the USDA mark of inspection and identifying package dates of “042109″ or “042209″:
“USDA CHOICE OR HIGHER, Bnls Beef Bottom Sirloin, Butt Ball Tip 2/DN S/T.” Each box bears case code of “21852″ or “21853.”
“Swift, Bnls Beef Bottom Sirloin, Butt Ball Tip 2/DN S/T.” Each box bears case code of “31852.”
“Bnls Beef Bottom Sirloin, Butt Ball Tip 2/UP S/T.” Each box bears case code of “31853.”
“Swift, USDA SELECT, Bnls Beef Bottom Sirloin, Butt Ball Tip 2/DN S/T.” Each box bears case code of “33852.”

“USDA CHOICE OR HIGHER, Bnls Beef Bottom Sirloin, Butt Ball Tip 2/UP S/T.” Each box bears case code of “90853.”
The following recalled boxes of beef bear the establishment number “EST. 969″ inside the USDA mark of inspection and an identifying package date of “042109″:
“Bnls Beef Bottom Sirloin, Butt Ball Tip 2/DN S/T.” Boxes bear case codes “79852″ or “79853.”
The FSIS has announced three Class I recalls recently about which we have written; all three involved the potential of beef products to be contaminated with the E. coli O157:H7 pathogen. Earlier this week International Meat Company recalled 6,152 pounds of ground beef products. Earlier this month Snow Creek Meat Processing issued a recall of about 75 pounds of fresh beef trim products and SP Provision recalled 39,973 lbs of ground beef, which were sold under the brand names Cascade Natural Beef and SP Provisions.
An indicator of fecal contamination, E. coli may cause fatal blood poisoning, cystitis, deadly septicemia, and death. Symptoms of infection include stomach cramps and watery diarrhea that may turn bloody within one to three days. E. coli generally taints meat through improper butchering and processing practices and, once released in the body, produces the shiga-producing toxins that have been linked to kidney damage in young children, and can also lead to kidney failure and death.
