Black Pepper Culprit in Sausage Salmonella Outbreak

Danielle International, the company behind a massive recall of Italian sausage products linked to a multistate Salmonella outbreak, says it has now confirmed that black pepper used on the products is the source of the illnesses.

Over the weekend, Daniele International recalled 1.24 million pounds of ready-to-eat Italian sausage products because of concerns they had some association with the outbreak. Yesterday we reported that DNA fingerprinting conducted by the University of Iowa’s Hygienic Laboratory confirmed that Salmonella from a sample of leftover Daniele International sausage found in one victim’s home matched the same strain as the national outbreak. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said 13 ill persons have been identified who purchased the same type of sliced salami variety pack manufactured by Daniele at different grocery store locations before becoming ill. Salmonella Outbreak May be Linked to Black Pepper Used on Recalled Italian Sausage Products

Health officials are trying to determine if an outbreak of Salmonella poisoning in 39 states is linked to Italian sausage products recalled by Daniele International, Inc. of Rhode Island. A connection has not yet been confirmed, but at least 11 of the victims in the outbreak reported eating salami products from the “Daniele Italian Brand Gourmet Pack.”

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstance, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Salmonella Prompts More Nut Recalls

Two more recalls have been prompted over potentially contaminated nuts, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced. These are not the first recalls of nuts in recent days. We’ve been following the growing issue of these possible Salmonella contaminations and have reported—citing the FDA—a growing number of firms recalling nuts, specifically hazelnuts, due to contamination concerns.

Salmonella Confirmed In Newark Restaurant Outbreak

Earlier this week we wrote about another food poisoning outbreak that seemed to be linked to Iberia Peninsula, a Newark, New Jersey restaurant, that likely originated on or near Christmas Eve, according to NJ.com. Patrons of Iberia Peninsula have been suffering from symptoms that point to Salmonella poisoning. Now, said NJ.com, health officials in that city have confirmed that Salmonella is, in fact, the cause of the outbreak.

“We have the list of foods served and are in the process of trying to determine the source,” said city spokeswoman Esmeralda Diaz Cameron, quoted NJ.com. Diaz Cameron said that Iberia Peninsula remains open for business and city inspectors have been monitoring the establishment since reports first surfaced, noted NJ.com. Salmonella Prompts Recall Of Rico Queso Duro Blanco (White Hard Cheese)

A recall of 16-ounce packages of Rico Queso duro blanco (white hard cheese), distributed by Flores Food of America, is being recalled because the cheese may have been contaminated with Salmonella, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration just announced.

The recalled Rico Queso cheese product comes in a 16-ounce, clear plastic package under the Rico Queso name brand. The recalled cheese was distributed in the state of Florida in local retail stores, and the contamination was discovered after routine testing by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services revealed the presence of the Salmonella pathogen. Production has been suspended while the company continues its investigation into the source of the problem. More Salmonella Prompts Recall Of Rico Queso Duro Blanco (White Hard Cheese)

Food Poisoning Outbreak Linked to Newark Restaurant

Another food poisoning outbreak—apparently linked to a Newark, New Jersey restaurant—may have started on Christmas Eve, said NJ.com. It seems patrons of the Iberia Peninsula restaurant are suffering from symptoms that point to Salmonella poisoning, said those who ate at the restaurant and city officials, reported NJ.com.

“There are two fellas that (sic) are still in the hospital and nine people that (sic) are on antibiotics,” said Manuel Guerra, a manager at Leslie Furniture. Leslie Furniture is located in the Ironbound section of Newark and was hosting an annual Christmas party at Iberia Peninsula, a Portuguese restaurant, said NJ.com. Among those ill, Guerra’s nephew remains hospitalized. “Never in my life did I think it could be this bad,” Guerra said, describing his nephew’s illness; “Right now they’re 99 percent sure it’s Salmonella,” quoted NJ.com. E. Coli, Salmonella Found in Ammonia Treated Beef

The safety practices of Beef Products Inc., a South Dakota meat processor that treats beef trim with ammonia to eliminate E. coli and Salmonella, are being called into question. According to a recent New York Times report, Beef Products’ ammonia treatment method may not work as well against E. coli and Salmonella as the company claims.

Beef Products exposes its meat to ammonia gas, which raises its alkalinity, making it less hospitable to E. coli and Salmonella. According to The New York Times, the process has allowed Beef Products to engineer fattier beef trimmings – more susceptible to contamination – into a leaner product. Prior to the introduction of the ammonia method, such fatty trimmings were usually used to make pet food or cooking oil. More E. Coli, Salmonella Found in Ammonia Treated Beef
