Bed Bugs Plague Connecticut School, Wisconsin Hospital

The Jersey City Municipal Court and the Hudson County Plaza building in New Jersey; the administrative offices of the University of Wisconsin Health and Clinics; the New York City Ballet and New York City Opera; Nike Inc.’s flagship store, Victoria’s Secret, Hollister, Bloomingdale’s, and Abercrombie and Fitch; Sirius Radio and the Wall Street Journal; theatres; apartments and hospitals nationwide; and the Empire State Building have all been plagued by bed bugs.

Now, MyFoxNY reports that the insidious pests have been found in Connecticut’s prominent Academy of Information Technology and Engineering school in a student’s backpack. Students reported seeing bed bugs walk out of a dictionary, which led to six rooms at the facility being sealed and one bus pulled from service, said MyFoxNY.

A second school was involved when it was discovered that a sibling connected to the original incident attended another school in the vicinity, noted MyFoxNY. “This is the first time in my public school career that I’ve dealt with bed bugs,” Principal Paul Gross said, quoted MyFoxNY.

Bed bugs were reported in the Aurora Sinai Medical Center in Milwaukee’s emergency room resulting in two hospital rooms being shut down and, according to Fox6Now, pointing to bigger issues in Milwaukee. Two patients, in two separate instances, were found to be traveling with bed bugs when they were being treated in ER; both cases took place over the past week or so, said Fox6Now.

The hospital stated that both patients were immediately quarantined; the rooms they were in were also sealed and treated for bed bugs, said Fox6Now. Milwaukee Human Services Representative Todd Weiler just compiled a city guide to dealing with bed bugs, and said the issue at Aurora Sinai is part of an overarching problem. “We’ve gone from perhaps two dozen complaints a year to, we’re just about six a day now,” said Weiler, quoted Fox6Now.

In response to Manhattan’s increasing problem with bed bugs, New York City is hosting a beg bug conference tomorrow the Real Estate Board of New York. The summit follows news that PS 87 on New York City’s Upper West Side was the newest site reporting an infestation. According to CBS New York, the pests have been seen in over 16 schools this academic year alone.

In the first two months of the academic year, reports of bed bug cases have just about tripled, with expectations that this figure—as high as it is so early in the school year—will greatly increase by school year’s end, said CBS NY.

Also, the Waldorf Astoria has been hit with two lawsuits and a third report of complaints of bed bugs. The resurgent pests have sparked at least two other lawsuits; many more lawsuits are expected as the pests show up in an ever-growing range of areas.

At least five states have sought assistance from the Department of Defense and the state of Ohio recently asked the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for permission to use a banned pesticide, said ABC News previously.
