Beech-Nut Recalls Baby Food Over Possible Glass Contamination

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that Beech-Nut Nutrition is recalling approximately 1,920 pounds of baby food products that may be contaminated with small pieces of glass.

The recalled baby food was produced on December 12, 2014. The following product is subject to recall:

  • 4-oz. glass jars containing “Stage 2 Beech-Nut CLASSICS sweet potato & chicken”

The recalled jars bear the establishment number P-68A inside the USDA mark of inspection; the product expiration date is DEC 2016. The product numbers are 12395750815 through 12395750821. These items were shipped to stores nationwide, according to the USDA announcement.

The problem was discovered when a consumer found a small piece of glass in the product and notified the firm. Beech-Nut, based in Amsterdam, NY, has received one report of an oral injury associated with consumption of the product. FSIS has no additional reports of injury or illness from consumption of these products, but anyone who is concerned about an injury or illness should contact the child’s doctor.

This is a Class I recall, FSIS’s most serious category, for situations where there is a “reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

The food safety service says that it routinely conducts checks to ensure that recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that they are taking steps to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS web site at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

Anyone who has purchased the affected baby food and has questions about the recall can contact the Beech-Nut Consumer Hotline at (866) 674-4446. Consumers with food safety questions can “Ask Karen,” the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov or via smartphone at m.askkaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day. The online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System can be accessed 24 hours a day at: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/reportproblem.
