On Wednesday, the CPSC announced the recall of approximately 116,000 portable DVD battery packs which can overheat and explode while being recharged thereby posing a burn and fire hazard to consumers. The battery packs were manufactured in China by Mintek Digital Inc. of Anaheim, California and sold between September 2002 and January 2005 nationwide.
The battery packs are used with Mintek portable DVD players having a 7" (diagonal) screen and model number DVD-1710. This number appears on the top and bottom of the unit. The DVD player is silver and grey and the battery pack is silver with a nameplate that is marked RB-LiP01 or RB-LiP02.
There have been 10 reports of incidents including 9 cases of overheating and/or catching fire and one report of overheating and bursting. Consumers should stop using the product immediately and contact Mintek for a free replacement battery pack. The DVD player may continue to be used with the AC power adapter.
