FDA ISSUES WARNING CONCERNING POSSIBLE ABUSE OF DEXTROMETHORPHAN (DXM), AN INGREDIENT IN MANY OVER THE COUNTER COUGH AND COLD REMEDIES, WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE RECENT DEATHS OF FIVE TEENAGERS

This important warning was released by the FDA on May 20 (before newsinferno.com began publishing online news). However, the danger involved is so serious we wish to take this opportunity to remind the public of this potential hazard.

DXM is normally a safe ingredient used in several over the counter cough and cold remedies. Ingestion of excessive amounts of the chemical, however, is extremely dangerous and may cause serious adverse reactions including brain damage, seizure, loss of consciousness, and irregular heart beat. In extreme cases it can cause death. Unfortunately, pure DXM powder is now being sold and offered for street use in capsules by drug dealers.

Recently, the deaths of five teenagers have been associated with the possible consumption of DMX in its pure powered form. The FDA is working with other health and law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter, address the issue of DMX abuse, and warn the public of the danger. The FDA website is www.fda.gov.
