Hand Trucks Recalled Following 19 Injuries

A large recall of about 292,000 Harper Trucks Hand Trucks has been implemented, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced.

The defective Harper Trucks Hand Trucks were manufactured in China, the United States, and Taiwan by Harper Trucks Inc., of Wichita, Kansas and were sold at the Home Depot from September 2008 through March 2009 and Sam’s Club from January 1993 through January 2002 for between $28 and $42.

When the tires are over-inflated, the tires can explode causing the wheel hub to separate or break, ejecting pieces of the hub. This poses an injury hazard to bystanders. To date, Harper Trucks has received 19 reports of over-inflated tires exploding that resulted in 19 injuries, some serious, including broken bones, loss of sight in one eye, contusions, and lacerations.

This recall involves Harper Trucks Hand Trucks with the following model numbers and handle and wheel types:

• Model Number K52K16: P handle and 1-piece composite wheel.

• Model Number JEDTK1935P: Dual Hand/Platform Truck (Convertible) handle and 3-piece, four bolt, metal-/chrome-plated wheel.

• Model Number 51TK19: Dual handles and 3-piece, four bolt, metal-/chrome-plated wheels.

• Model Number BKTAK19: P handle and 3-piece, four bolt, metal/chrome plated wheels.

• Model Number PGCSK19BLK: Dual Hand handle and 3-piece, four bolt, metal-/chrome-plated wheels

The words “Harper Truck” and the model number can be found on an adhesive sticker on the hand truck frame’s cross member. Hand trucks with two-piece, grey metal wheels are not included in this recall.

Harper Trucks is advising consumers to stop using the recalled Hand Trucks immediately and contact Harper Trucks for a free repair kit that includes either lock washers to secure the four bolts on the 3-piece, metal-/chrome-plated wheels or new design replacement tires for the 1-piece composite tires.

Harper Trucks can be reached, toll-free, at 1.800.835.4099 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Central Time (CT), Monday through Friday; by email at wheels@harpertrucks.com; or at the firm’s website at www.harpertrucks.com.
