Kleen Kanteen Water Bottle Spouts Recalled

A massive recall—about 1.2 million in the United States and 102,000 in Canada—of <"http://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/product_liability">Klean Kanteen Water Bottle Spouts has been implemented, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC) just announced.

The Sport Cap 2.0 water bottle spouts, which were made in China and manufactured by Klean Kanteen Inc., of Chico, California, can break or crack, posing a choking hazard to children and adults. To date, the firm has received six reports of incidents of the water bottle spouts breaking or cracking in children’s mouths as they were drinking from the bottles. No injuries have been reported.

Imports from China into the United States have long been making headlines for issues with defective parts and dangerous elements, including hazardous lead levels in children’s toys and products, parts that can break off and pose choking hazards to children, and problems with hooded sweatshirts with drawstrings that are considered defective and dangerous to children.

Recalls from products manufactured in China have also been associated with unsafe, sometimes deadly, medications, pet food, consumer food, and health items, as well as the ongoing drywall debacle that has been the culprit in untold numbers of cases involving homes across the United States plagued with corroding metals and offensive odors. In many cases the entire gutting of houses has been mandated to correct the problem.

The Sport Cap 2.0 water bottle spouts are made of black plastic and have an attachment loop. “Klean Kanteen” is stamped into the side of the cap.

The recalled spouts were sold at outdoor sports stores—including LLBean—and grocery and specialty stores nationwide, and on the Web at www.llbean.com from April 2009 through April 2010 for $5 for the spout and between $15 and $28 when sold with a stainless steel water bottle.

The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled product and contact Klean Kanteen to receive a free mailing envelope to return the water bottle spout and to receive a free replacement. Klean Kanteen can be reached toll-free at (877) 546-9063 anytime, or at the firm’s website at www.kleankanteen.com/safetynotice.
