Lunchables Recalled Due to Undeclared Allergens, Misbranding

Kraft Heinz is recalling its ready-to-eat “Lunchables Ham and American Cracker Stackers because it is misbranded and contains undeclared allergens, including wheat and soy. These ingredients, which can cause a life-threatening allergic reaction in some individuals, were not listed on the product label. According to an Oct. 9 recall alert posted on the U.S. Department of Agriculture website, the recall affects 959 pounds of packaged lunch products.

The recalled Lunchables were produced on Sept. 21, 2016. The products have a “USE BY” date of 25 DEC 2016 and production times ranging from 9:13 to 10:00 stamped on the side of the container, the alert states. Inside the USDA mark of inspection, consumers can locate the establishment number. Products affected by the recall have establishment number “EST. 537K”. The Lunchables were distributed to Utah and California.

Kraft Heinz identified the problem through a consumer complaint on Oct. 6, 2016. So far, there have been no reports of allergic reactions associated with the product.

According to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the products are misbranded because they do not list the allergens. “The establishment determined that the “Lunchables Ham and American Cracker Stackers” products were incorrectly labeled with the back label for a “Nacho Lunchable” product. The back label contains the product ingredient statements and as such, the “Lunchables Ham and American Cracker Stackers” products that were mislabeled do not declare wheat and soy on the label.” the announcement states.

The recall has been designated as class I by the USDA, which is the agency’s most serious recall status. A class I recall means that exposure to the product presents a reasonable possibility of serious injury or death.
Consumers who purchased the recalled products should not eat it, the alert states. The product should be disposed of or returned to place of purchase.
