Nationwide M&Ms Recall: Allergen Concerns

Nationwide-M&Ms-RecallLast week, Mars Chocolate North America announced a voluntary recall of its M&Ms Brand Theater Box, 3.40 oz, UPC #40000294764 because the box may contain peanut butter M&Ms, though peanut butter– an allergen – is not listed on the outside of the box.

The inside package is correctly labeled with ingredients and allergy information, according to the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) web site. People with peanut allergies run the risk of a serious or life-threatening reaction if their theater box contains an M&Ms Brand Peanut Butter bag and they consume the product. No adverse reactions have been reported to date.

The issue was identified after a consumer notified the company of a package containing peanut butter M&Ms inside a box labeled M&Ms Brand Milk Chocolate Theater Box. A full list of the affected lot numbers can be found on the FDA web site (

The affected boxes were shipped and distributed to warehouses between May 8 and July 1, 2014 in the following states: NC, TX, MN, IL, FL, KY, MS, AZ, GA, AI, CA, NJ, PA, WA, NY, CO, MO, MI, NH, CT, TN, MD, SC, OH, ME, VA, RI, WI, WV, IA, LA, OK, MA, NE, OK, AR, VT, ID and IN. The warehouses redistribute the products for retail sale nationwide.

The M&Ms Brand Milk Chocolate Theater Box comes in a 3.40 oz brown, 3 x 6.5 inch cardboard box stamped on the right-hand side panel with the lot number and “best before” date.

Mars Chocolate said it will work to ensure that the recalled M&Ms are not on store shelves. Consumers who have purchased this item and have allergy concerns should return the product to the store where they purchased it for a full refund. Consumers with questions or concerns may call the company’s toll-free number, 1.800.627.7852, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm (EST).
