NHTSA Announces Recall of 2,000 Land Rovers for Crash Risk due to Potential 'Roll-Away' Problem

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced the recall of some 1949 Land Rovers because some of the SUVs may have been manufactures with a defective automatic transmission parking pawl guide plate.

The potential problem is that park may not engage when the driver moves the vehicle’s lever into park and all indicators show the “park position is achieved.” As a result, if the vehicle “was parked on an incline and the parking brake was not engaged, this could result in a vehicle roll-away condition, increasing the risk of a crash.”

This recall affects 2006 Land Rover LR3, the Land Rover/Range Rover, and the Land Rover/ Range Rover Sport. The NHTSA Campaign ID Number is 05V502000.

The recall is expected to begin on November 30, 2005. Consumers should contact Land Rover at 1-800-637-6837 for a free replacement of the parking pawl guide plate.
