The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC), just announced a large recall of over 34,000 Realspaceâ„¢ PRO 3000 Series Desk Chairs in both the United States and Canada.
In total, about 34,000 defective Realspaceâ„¢ PRO 3000 Series Desk Chairs were recalled in the U.S.; another 425 were recalled in Canada, said the agencies.
The Realspaceâ„¢ PRO 3000 Series Desk Chairs were manufactured in China; imported by Office Depot Inc., of Boca Raton, Florida; manufactured by Huichang Furniture Co. Ltd., of China; and sold exclusively at Office Depot retail stores nationwide, as well as online at www.OfficeDepot.com, from May 2009 through June 2011 for about $170.
A consumer’s finger can get caught in an opening in the chair’s tilt mechanism, posing a pinch hazard to consumers. To date, Office Depot has received one report of a consumer who was injured when his finger was pinched by the chair’s tilt mechanism.
This recall involves all Realspaceâ„¢ PRO 3000 Series Custom Fit desk chairs.
The mid-back fabric chairs were sold in black and have SKU number 996-190. The date of manufacture, P.O. number, and the words “Made in China” are printed on labels located on the underside of the seat bottom. Affected chairs also have a manufacture date between March 2009 and May 2011 that appears in Year/Month/Date format (e.g. date code 20100812 represents August 12, 2010).
The firm is advising consumers to immediately stop using the chairs and contact Office Depot’s recall hotline to receive a free repair kit with a cover for the tilt mechanism. Consumers should write down the P.O. number found on the underside of the chair for reference when contacting Office Depot. Office Depot can be reached, toll-free, at 1.855.259.5093 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time (ET), Monday through Friday, or at the firm’s website at www.officedepot.com.
