Oriental Packing Co. Curry Powders Recalled for Lead Contamination

Oriental Packing Co., Inc., of Miami, Florida has recalled approximately 377,000 lbs. of blended curry seasoning products because the products are contaminated with lead.

Lead can accumulate in the body over time and can cause serious and sometimes permanent adverse health consequences, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains in the August 12 recall announcement. Lead exposure is particularly dangerous for children; lead has been shown to affect children’s IQ, attention, and behavior.

To date, no illnesses have been reported.

The products are available in 2oz., 4oz., 6oz., 8oz., 22oz., and 5 lb. sizes. The lot number and best before date can be found on the top of the cap or at the bottom of the bottle. The best before dates range from 11/1/18 through 6/29/19. A full list of the recalled lot numbers for those dates can be found in the recall announcement on the FDA website.

The curry powders were distributed in New York and Florida and are sold online and in retail stores nationwide.

The New York State Health Department discovered lead in the curry powders through a routine sample program. Oriental Packing has ceased the production and distribution of the product. The FDA and the company continue to investigate what caused the problem.

Because of the dangers of lead, consumers should not discard the products with household trash, but are urged to dispose of unused product following regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency or state and county regulations. Or consumers can return the curry powder to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers may contact Oriental Packing Company toll free, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST, at 800-809-9793.
