Police Officer Arrested Following Deadly Wrong-Way Crash

A Suffolk County police officer is under arrest following a deadly wrong-way crash on Sunrise Highway in West Islip. Police said the off-duty officer, who works for the Third Precinct, was driving the wrong way and crashed into another vehicle, killing the other driver.

The off-duty officer was driving a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder early Tuesday morning. He was in the westbound lanes between exits 40 and 39, Newsday reports. The accident occurred between Higbie Lane overpass and Route 231 overpass at 4:38 a.m. The police officer struck a 2016 Ford van. The van caught fire, and the driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they are still continuing to investigate the accident and “additional charges may be forthcoming” according to Newsday. Individuals with any information on the crash are asked to call Major Case Unit detectives at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All information will be kept confidential.

In Suffolk County, a drunk driver recently crashed into a college student’s wheelchair-accessible van and destroyed it. The student, who was born with spinal muscular atrophy, is now forced to take the public bus to get to class. His commute, which was half an hour by van, now takes three hours.
