Whole Foods Market Recalls Roquefort Cheese

Whole Foods Market is recalling a Roquefort cheese sold in its stores nationwide because the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.

The disease primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In rare instances, persons without these risk factors can also be seriously affected. The risk may be reduced by following recommendations for safe food preparation, consumption, and storage.

Listeria infection symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms but listeria infection can cause serious illness in higher risk individuals and can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. The CDC advises anyone who develops symptoms of listeria infection to seek immediate medical care.

The recalled Papillon Organic Roquefort cheese was cut and packaged in clear plastic wrap and sold with Whole Foods Market scale labels. Whole Foods Market decided to recall the cheese after routine sampling conducted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found Listeria monocytogenes in a whole, uncut wheel of the cheese. The Papillon Organic Roquefort cheese can be identified by the scale label that begins with PLU 029536. All sell by dates of the cheese are included in the recall.

To date, no illnesses or infections have been reported. Whole Foods has posted signs on store shelves to notify customers of this recall. All affected cheese has been removed from store shelves, the FDA reports.

Consumers who have purchased this cheese from Whole Foods Market stores may bring their receipt to the store for a full refund. Consumers with questions about the recall should contact their local Whole Foods store or call 512-477-5566 ext. 20060 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST.
